Dear Judges,
A (……..) has lived in this home for three
generations. Initially I had many plans to restore
it. However, my father was diagnosed with cancer. My
plans flew out the window. I focused on doctors
appointments, chemo, radiation, working full time
and running my father’s store. I lived at various
hospitals as my dad needed many surgeries. My mother
became ill. She spent almost 9 months in various
hospitals.
My home declined as my dad’s health declined. After
a long and difficult battle my father died. Prior to
his death he lived with me in his childhood home. It
was the most difficult but wonderful time in my
life. We would talk for hours about my dad’s life in
this house, the many friends (past and present) that
spent time here. We laughed and at times we cried.
In our minds we pulled down walls, painted the
kitchen, and designed places for the appliances. It
was always going to happen. It never did. Although
my father never got to see our home brought back to
life. He lived life in that little kitchen as if it
was a palace and everything was beautiful. My stove
is over 50 years old, the seal is broken and the
pilot light is sporadic. My meals are either burnt
or raw. My father never cared. He always told me
they were great.
They say pictures speak thousand words. My pictures
point to one word ugly! The kitchen is 12’ x 12’ 7”.
I do not have any cabinets or counters. My pantry is
4’ 4” x 3’ 6”. You risk your life in there. The sink
is old. The cold water faucet refuses to work much
of the time. The two outlets are hidden. I have
bonded with extensions cords.
As my wise father would say, “Kiddo you are in need
of a Kitchen Intervention.” Please Help me!
